What Is Propagation?

Ever wondered what is the propagation and what it is all about? If this question has ever been popped into your head, then read this elaboration of reproduction.

Propagation is the process of developing new and different plants from the plants you are already having. Wildly, propagation from seeds is the most used procedure. This can be acquired from flowering, pollination, fertilization even from seed formation. Being natural habitats of succulents and cacti decline, the requirement of propagation and maintaining these species in cultivation becomes more and more essential for succulent’s holding on to life. There is more to that, but breeding has become part of the charm of growing these plants. Growers and hobbyists who have strived to propagate succulents find it exceptionally rewarding and engaging.

None can defy the Fact that succulents can propagate in enormous ways, and so does cactus, but this is the reality on the ground that some plants can be reproduced more easily and briskly than others. Even propagation may vary from species to species. So the  Common methods to propagate cacti are:

Propagating from Cuttings

Propagating, which is being done by stem cuttings, is probably the most well known and convenient procedure. Many cacti can be propagated adequately by stem cuttings. Stem cuttings are being taken from a current

Plant, then allowed to dry and callous. The cuttings will, at last, commence to be rooted from the cut end and commence sustaining as a new plant.

Propagating From Seeds

Most cacti species possess a tendency to propagate from seeds. This process is time-consuming and requires an enormous amount of patience, but it is advantageous when being accomplished. Cacti, which contains solitary growth and sustainability, are supposed to be propagated by seeds. Seeds can be harvested from the plant’s flowers. The flowers need to be fertilized either by pollinators or through self-pollination. Self-pollination can be acquired by using a paintbrush to pollinate the flowers. If all goes well, fertilization will occur. The flowers can then be dried and saved, and seeds harvested from them. The harvested seeds are meant to be provided with an adequate environment to germinate into seedlings. The germinated seedlings will be ready to be transplanted and treated as new plants once they grow sufficient enough. You usually need to start with a lot of seeds since only a few seedlings survive to maturity.

Propagating From OffSets

Many cacti species propagate asexually using growing shoots or offsets. Not all cacti produce offshoots: the ones that do include Echinops species, mammillaria species, and many others. Offshoots can be removed cautiously and placed in a suitable potting mix to commence a new plant. Eradicating branches from the plant assist in refocusing the energy on the sustainability of the paramount plant.

There are some different methods to propagate succulents. Some are discussed below, and these are the most convenient steps to follow to propagate your cacti adequately.

Step 1

Be assured that your tool is not disinfected at all. It is suggested that one should opt to use a sharp knife or razor blade. Pruning shears are not usually desirable for developing clean cuts. One often wants a clean cut and avoid jagged edges or crushing the tissues of the cacti. One should assure that the knife or blade one is using is of standard quality, and it should be cleaned and not infected to prevent the spread of disease. One is now supposed to wash them with warm soapy water or use alcohol wipes to disinfect. Be cautious about cleaning every single time one performs a cutting by wiping the tool to eradicate fungus and diseases.

Step 2

Now one is supposed to protect his/her hands and fingers. While one IS coping with the prickly and spiny cacti, it is always a good idea to wear gloves and use tools like tongs or pieces of cloth to protect their fingers and hands.

Step 3

Such a  time has arrived when one comment Cutting off one of the pads. Now select a pad to cut. Afterward, one needs to choose a beautiful fettle plant to acquire a better success rate. Prohibit the usage of pads with clear signs of stress, disease, or discolouration. Even sometimes, pads break off briskly. Then it is better to simply grab a cactus pad using your tongs or a piece of cloth to break off the pad from the main plant. You can also use a sharp, sterile knife to cut one of the pads off.

Step 4

Let it be dried. After cutting, assure it that the pads are dry for some days to permit the wound to heal. Make sure to keep away from direct exposure of sunlight while drying.

Step 5

Now dip in rooting hormone (optional). Once it becomes dry then  dip the cut part of the pad in rooting hormone.

Step 6

At last, plant the cutting. Now choose a pot and commence preparing a potting mix suitable for cacti with better drainage facility. Now one could plant the dry cutting into the potting mix by sticking the cut part into the soil simultaneously. Even it must be assured that about ⅓ of the cutting should be in the ground. Let’s pack the soil around the pad to secure it, so it does not tip over.

OR

One should lay down the pads flatly. Rather than planting straight away, a few people choose to lay the pads flat until roots commence flourishing. Once roots have been developed, so now plant it in a suitable potting mix.

Step 7

The ending procedure is where one has to water sparingly. Then they need to wait for a couple of days before watering the newly potted pad. One can mist the soil every few days or when the ground feels dry. Now when roots have been flourished, one could alleviate watering and permit the land to dry out before watering again.

Step 8

Eradicate the direct exposure of sunlight. Now find a place of bright location and then place it there rather than putting in a dull place; however, it doesn’t mean that it does not protect plants from direct sunlight till the time roots have been flourished.

If one has a new plant, then several weeks are needed for the roots to be developed. But after a few months later, one would observe new growth, and now they have a new plant. Even they can slowly increase the amount and immensity of sunlight to eradicate the burning of the plant.

Propagating By Grafting

The following are the required tools to propagate by grafting: Cacti, Sharp knife, Rubbing alcohol, Rubber bands, Electrical tape, Gloves.

Step 1

It is required that one has disinfected the knife. Now use a pointed knife that has been cleaned or is not infected. One could do this by washing with warm water or wiping with rubbing alcohol. Be cautious about disinfecting every single time one performs a cutting by cleaning the knife with alcohol to eradicate fungus or diseases.

Step 2

Now select any cacti to be grafted. Grafting requires a compatible and rigorous rootstock. Compatibility is exceptionally essential for grafting to be accomplished. A suggestion is present there were choosing a fast-growing one as the base or rootstock and a slow-growing one on top of the scion. There are some common cacti used as rootstocks are Hylocereus Trigonus or Undatus and Trichocereus Spachianus. Having the rootstock and scion from the same species raises the compatibility.

Step 3

It is important to prepare the rootstock. Now cut the about a few inches beyond the soil.

Step 4

Afterwards cut down the scion. Then one has to  cut the top off a cactus stem about 1-inch in diameter. This will be the scion.

Step 5

No one has to decide to place the scion on top of the rootstock. Cautiously place the scion on the cut portion of the rootstock so that the vascular cambium of both cacti are touching each other. The vascular cambium is the distinct ring in the center of the cut cactus. The vascular cambium of the scion and rootstock are supposed to come in contact with each other to acquire a successful grafting

Step 6

At last one is suppose to secure these two together. One can use any bending but preferably one can use rubber bands or electrical tape to secure the two cacti together. Asure that the scion is well secured and pressing against the rootstock.

Step 7

Eventually, one has to wait for at least two months. After that one or two months, one should remove these rubber bands or tape. However one should assure that the scion should be firmly attached to the rootstock and one has a newly grafted cactus plant.
